    2009 Western Sustainability and Pollution Prevention Network Conference

    Greening The Conference

    To ensure the activities related to our conference remain as green as possible, WSPPN and PPRC are working collaboratively with the hotel on a variety of areas to reduce the environmental impact of our event. In addition, we feel that it is important that you, as a registrant, participate in our green efforts too. Here are some the practices that we aim to promote at the conference and would like to involve you as well:

    SIGN A GREEN PLEDGE: At the registration desk, a pledge will be available for those individuals that promise to do the following during their stay:
    ___• Reuse linens;
    ___• Turn off lights and air-conditioning when exiting rooms;
    ___• Refuse newspaper delivery to the hotel room;

    FILL OUT A GREEN SURVEY – WSPPN and PPRC would like to know what “green actions” you took to reduce your carbon and/or environmental footprint while preparing and traveling to the conference. There are two ways you could participate in this activity:
    ___1) Download the survey below today, try to accomplish as many as the categories as possible, and bring it to the conference ___already filled-out, or.
    ___2) Pick up a survey at the registration desk at the conference, write-in what you did while preparing and traveling to the conference, ___and return it.

    It really doesn’t matter which option you choose, since we will be collecting your filled-out survey at the registration desk anytime during the conference. In exchange for your survey, you’ll receive a ticket. Ticket numbers will be pulled from a basket at the end of the conference where winners will receive a prize that is sure to be cool and ecologically-friendly.

    OTHER GREEN INITIATIVES

    WSPPN and PPRC are working collaboratively on following:

    ___1. With the hotel to:
    ______• Place recycling bins for cans, bottles and paper throughout the conference area:
    ______• Work with the senior chef to ensure conference meals and snacks largely consist of locally-grown, organic foods;
    ______• Ensure that no disposable plastic bottles are served during the conference.

    ___2. Organize, plan, and prepare conference material and activities in a manner that:
    ______• Reduces paper-use significantly (see registration question regarding handout material options);
    ______• Prints all conference materials on 100% post-consumer recycled, chlorine-free paper;
    ______• Uses recycled name badges and ask registrants to return them at the end of the conference;
    ______• Serves items in bulk, i.e. no individually-wrapped cookies, no bottled water (only water in pitchers), etc.
    ______• Ensures that all silverware and tableware can be re-used;
    ______• Coordinates with hotel, if possible, for offer recycled paper throughout (including toilet paper) conference activities;
    ______

    Of course, there may be other things we can do to make our event greener. If you can think of something and would like to share
    with us your idea, please send your comment to:
